Published Novels

My books are leadership stories and have been used in guided discussions with high school and college sports programs. Through my writing, readers immerse themselves in challenging situations they might otherwise not experience, and we dissect choices as tied to outcomes, not in terms of "right and wrong" absolutes, but the nuances of decision-making in ambiguous situations. Leaders are developed and honed through exposure to new challenges. My books promote critical thinking by examining leadership in the crucible of combat. These tenets can be applied in a variety of ways, particularly in high-stress environments requiring maximum trust in the organization to achieve results.

Dream Job

From acclaimed author Ivan F. Ingraham, Dream Job addresses the challenges a veteran faces transitioning from military service. Financially strapped and unsure of his next step after his military career, Marine combat veteran, Steve Keller, is presented with an opportunity make it in the “real” world. During the job interview, his career is examined through retrospection and analysis, leading to a dramatic conclusion.

Amazon Customer Intriguing and Vivid Story with Worthwhile Lessons
Dream Job, by Ivan F. Ingraham expertly captures the emotions often felt—but seldom expressed—by military officers entering the corporate profit world for the first time after a long service career. Fast-paced, easy reading, and intriguing. Ingraham skillfully tells a story that values earned trust and friendship over comfort and compensation. Experience is the best teacher evident in the careful treatment Mr. Ingraham uses to develop his characters on both sides of the search and realization of the Dream Job. Mr. Ingraham clearly understands, and then shares camaraderie in a way that non-service members will easily understand. A superb novella. Highly recommended for everyone at the point of convergence between the corporate world and the transitioning military veteran to gain better understanding of the initial perspectives.
AZ CowgirlLife After
After 33 years of service I was retired by the Army. It was with the feeling of being kicked to the curb. Mr. Ingraham touches on this eloquently. It is not easy finding your place in the world when you have devoted so much of yourself to this one path. It is encouraging to see that the path may not always be what is expected but does end with being what is right.
David F. The Next Phase
Well written and interesting story. Nice perspective on moving on to the next phase of ones life.

Athena: Bravery Knows No Gender

From the author of The Patrol, this short story focuses on the contributions of women who served in Cultural Support Teams in support of Special Operations in Afghanistan. This is a story of perseverance, strength, and leadership in difficult circumstances. Bravery knows no gender.

Mark S. Compelling short story right from the start!
Hats off to Ivan Ingraham for his compelling short-story "Athena". Ivan has the unique talent to pull his readers along through the eyes of the main characters. His descriptions of the raw emotions of combat and the aftermath gripped me on an level that few authors are able to do. Can't wait to read more from this up-and-coming author!
Lori B.Bravery is Bravery
I was curious about how a male author would portray the female military experience. Thankfully, Mr. Ivan Ingraham did not skirt the issue or downplay the impact that sexism had on the three women who made up the Cultural Support Team (CST) that deployed to Afghanistan in 2013. The narrative of "ATHENA" revolves around Captain Mia Preston, Staff Sergeant Carmen Juarez, and Sergeant Calli Heller, exploring their acceptance, training, and experiences within the groundbreaking CST program. It also takes readers beyond the wire into direct combat where each woman will earn a well deserved Combat Action Ribbon. Although it's a brief read, the brevity doesn't diminish the underlying message that "bravery is bravery." The book highlights the invaluable and meaningful service of the CST and their efforts during the war, which are just as significant as those of their male counterparts, even if that fact remains unacknowledged by others.
Alianna M. A Realistic Sense of Serving in Combat Zones
This is a good read. It is relatively short. I bought the paperback version, and for those who like books in a larger-print format, it is very easy to read. Ivan F. Ingraham does a good job of character development and placing his characters in their environment, so we know who they are and why they are serving overseas as members of the U.S. Marine Corps. He shows us their values through placing them in realistic situations where they have to act on what they believe in (taking care of their people, mutual respect coupled with determination), before taking us into the bigger plot line. His storytelling is rooted in experience. There is a sense of grit that those who have never served can not even imagine - unless presented in stories such as this. I recommend this book to those who want not only a good story, but also to gain greater respect and more appreciation for those who serve in the armed forces, particularly the U.S. Marines.

22: A Journey to the Edge of Darkness

In 22: A Journey to The Edge of Darkness, Ingraham examines the difficult subject of Veteran’s suicide. This thought-provoking story covers themes of Post-Traumatic Stress, survivor’s guilt, mental isolation, and the emotional toll of combat, immersing readers in a unique and transformative tale of reconciliation.

Jay L. Be Prepared to Get Punched in the Heart!
This is a short and powerful story packed to the brim with genuine emotion. The message contained in the sentiment of this book is tremendously important, and needs to be read and shared by the masses. Thanks for bringing this work to the world, Ivan!
Mike C. Insightful and Thought Provoking
Ivan is a professional warrior and writer who skillfully navigates this topic that has touched so many of us in the military community. Looking forward to reading his other books.
Mark V. A quick, easy - but very powerful read!
Who better to bring awareness to Post-Traumatic Stress than retired Marine Raider Ivan F. Ingraham. This quick, easy to read book tells a powerful tale of what it is like to serve in combat and experience survivors remorse - but at the same time bring forth a Ray of Hope. Veteran Suicide is serious business and this book will help bring awareness for those who have a loved one suffering.

The Patrol: A Story of MARSOC at War

Based upon true events on August 21, 2012, in southern Afghanistan. A Marine Special Operations Team embarks on a patrol that becomes anything but routine. This is a short story about leadership and the crucible of combat.

Jacob R. A military leader of unparalleled caliber
Ivan, a military leader of unparalleled caliber, offers a compelling glimpse into the demanding world of a Marine Special Operations Team. His book, while detailing a challenging patrol, is fundamentally a reflection of his exceptional command skills, tactical brilliance, and unshakeable integrity. Ivan is not just a military leader; he is a guiding light, a beacon of strength and wisdom, whose impact extends far beyond the pages of his book, I know this as I served under his command. His leadership has profoundly impacted my life, instilling in me values of resilience, integrity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. Ivan is the standard against which I measure my own leadership, striving to emulate his dedication and ability to turn challenges into opportunities for growth and success. I would blindly follow Ivan on any patrol, no questions asked.
Luke N. Good to see a MARSOC story
It's a great read and isn't accompanied by needless fluff or superhuman-like action. Some stories that have turned into the biggest hits for the public were action-packed because of the mistakes made to get into that situation, to begin with. This, however, is an honest look at a good team that still ends up with bad luck, is forced to handle the situation at hand, and shows the humanness in all of it.
JD 45Immersive story - perfectly captures Afghan experience for many SOF
Couldn't stop once I read the first page. The reader is 'on' this patrol and can see, feel, and smell those little bits of reality captured by a Marine Raider officer who lived it. Veterans of the village stability operations era of the Afghanistan will immediately recognize the familiar details and challenges while each reader can see the broader outlines of America's Afghan odyssey in the well told story based on real events.

My Story

About the Author

"I lead with purpose so that others can maximize their potential."

I’m a writer, speaker, and storyteller. I like to create things.

I’m a twenty-four year Marine Corps Veteran. I served in Marine Infantry, Reconnaissance and Special Operations units and have world-wide deployment experience across a breadth of operational environments. I enjoyed what I did and can make any team more effective through detailed situational analysis and problem solving. The best part of my job was working with and leading people on a variety of levels and I am passionate about leadership and its craft.

My superpower is the ability to examine situations and, with limited context, quickly distill the true crux of an issue. I can do this efficiently and it makes me a very effective evaluator and decision maker. As a leadership coach and consultant, this lends to my mission to improve the world-wide leadership crisis we are all experiencing through leadership and organizational culture consultation and keynote speaking engagements.

My other passion is writing. I am a novelist and screenwriter. I believe everyone has a story to tell, and I enjoy hearing people’s experiences to better understand them and their backgrounds. Life’s journey is better with diverse perspectives.

Troops in Contact Excerpt:

I served twenty-four years as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, most of them in Special Operations. Although a work of fiction, this book is influenced by true events. These all happened in some capacity over the course of my career, and helped create a story I felt is worth telling.

It’s one of distance, shame, fear, anger, longing, paranoia, and vigilance; a lack of closure; doubt, betrayal; the loneliness of leadership; and overall difficulty. It’s about pure vulnerability. It’s based upon the most talented, funniest, cruelest, basest, and interesting people I’ve ever known. Interspersed with humor, at times it was hard to identify and at others seemed starkly out of place.

Where the real names of people are utilized, the approval of the individual or their families was obtained and are used with permission. I used real names in some cases as an homage to who these people are. Some of them gave the last full measure with their lives. It’s the least I can do.  All other characters are figments of my imagination, and any resemblance to people living or dead is coincidental.

Military service is unique. Tight bonds form between disparate groups of people who come to rely upon each other in dire situations. Sometimes these relationships are life-long, but most often, they dissipate with the passage of time. My experience was no different. We once pledged forever to the other; now we never talk.
